Black Ant
Step 1: Put a dry fly hook size 14-20 in the vise, and tie on black thread.
Step 2: Tightly wrap on black dubbing to form a tight knit ball on the third of the hook shank farthest from the eye. This ball is supposed to imitate the thorax of an ant, so it should be proportional to the hook, or the body.
Step 3: Right after the dubbing, tie on a short black hackle, and wrap it three or four times around the middle of the hook, tie off the feather, and clip of excess.
Step 4: Dub another ball with the black dubbing tight against the wrapped hackle. This ball should be smaller than the thorax, as this ball imitates the abdomen.
Step 5: Wrap the black thread around the head of the hook several times to create the ant's head, and tie off and clip excess. Apply a drop of cement to the head of the fly, and you're done.
This fly works well with other colors, too, such as red and brown, and any other colors that would resemble a general ant-like insect.
