Smallmouth Bass Found commonly in rivers, lakes, and farm ponds all around DC, this is an easy to find, relatively easy to catch, hard fighting fish. They are normally smaller than 3 lb, and 20"
Largemouth Bass Same as Smallmouth Bass, but grows to be slightly larger and takes slightly larger flies.
Striped Bass The bread and butter of Eastern saltwater fishing, the striped bass comes into the Potomac river and other tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay for parts of the winter and spring. The majority of Bass caught in the freshwater or brackish water around DC are schoolies, less than 30" in length.
Panfish Bluegills, sunfish, croppies, pumpkinseeds, and other fish are the easiest to catch fish anywhere near DC. They can be found almost anywhere there are fish, anywhere where there are bass. They eat anything that fits in their mouth, and rarely are larger than 1 lb.
Shad
Brook Trout Found predominantly in mountain freestone streams several hours from the city, these are the prettiest fish one can find in this part of the country. In streams where they grow wild, fishing can be exceptionally easy, but in the summer months when the flow in mountain streams is minimal they can be very spooky. Normally are smaller than 10".
Brown Trout Brown trout can be found all over Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania where other trout are present. They normally are between 8" and 16", but as this picture shows, there are exceptions.
Rainbow Trout Rainbow trout are the hardest fighting of the coldwater fish around DC, and can be found (along with Brown Trout) in most streams and rivers where the water maintains a year round temperature of less than 65 degrees. They are similar to Brown Trout in size.
